Creating the healthiest green smoothie

By now, we all have a good idea of what a proper smoothie is. It has become the staple item to consume when wanting to incorporate maximum vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants, enzymes, fiber, and other healing qualities. But not all smoothies are created equal.  They come is different colors and combinations. Out of the vast choices out there, the green smoothie is by far the healthiest. Green smoothies are famous for being clean, lean, and highly nutritious. That is if you are getting the right green smoothie. I have recently been to multiple health food stores and juiceries and have been astonished to see the ingredient combinations they offer for smoothies. It’s very surprising to see how much fruit, and other types of sweeteners are added. That may sit well with some, but if you are looking to heal and nourish yourself, there are much better options.

Ways to maximize your smoothie’s nutrition

Here are some ideas on how to maximize the nutrition level on your green smoothie…

1. High-Speed Blender:  To create a good quality smoothie it would be ideal to have a high-speed blender. It breaks down all leafy greens to a smooth texture. Not all blenders have this capability. Do your research and invest in your health wisely.

2. Clean Base:  The base defines its texture. Since we are making a green smoothie we want to keep it simple, light, and clean. For this reason, water is your best option.  If you have access to coconut water from a real coconut, it could be a great alternative.

3. The Core:  The core/foundation defines the taste and overall character. The dominant ingredients for the green smoothie are leafy greens. Example kale, spinach, watercress, and other vibrant green veggies. The ratio should be approximately 70% greens / 30% fruits.

4.  Enhancers:  One of the ways to take your smoothie to the next level is by adding enhancers, such as superfoods. This could include chlorella, spirulina, chia seeds, and other green superfoods powders.

5. Sweeteners:  The best way to sweeten your smoothie is with fresh fruit. Fruit is naturally very sweet so there is no need to add any additional sweeteners like dates, agave, and coconut nectar. Keep it as simple as possible. Use fruit only and in moderation.

6. Organic:  The great thing about green smoothies are its various benefits but only if you are incorporating clean and organic ingredients. If you don’t have access to organic fruits and vegetables you can wash your non-organic produce with apple cider vinegar. The recommended ratio is 1 tablespoon of ACV to 1 cup of water. Let your veggies soak for 5 minutes and rinse.

7. Variety:  Smoothies are a great way to get your vitamins and minerals that you would normally not get from your everyday food. Therefore, add as much variety as possible and change up your ingredients to maximize its benefits. Wild herbs can be an excellent option to enhance your smoothie.

8. Be Creative:  There are so many fun and exciting ingredients to elevate your nutrition. A few good examples are fresh aloe vera, sprouts,  and even sauerkraut. It is so fun to add a little surprise element 😉

9. Seasonal and Local:  Seasonal food is harvested at the peak of its season. This allows the food to be at its freshest and tastiest capacity. In addition to eating seasonally, eating locally is just as ideal. Your food doesn’t have to travel far and therefore,  guarantees the best quality ingredients. This is an environmentally friendly practice as well 🙂 Together we can lessen our carbon footprint 🙂

10. Food Combination:  Studies have shown that two of the most synergistic ingredients for eliminating heavy metals in the body are chlorella and cilantro. This specific combination intensifies the detoxification effect in the body. It’s good to know that in addition to detoxifying our bodies, we are nourishing and replenishing as well.

This is my list of ways to make the tastiest and healthiest smoothie.   Did I miss something? I’m curious to hear about your tips:)
